I wanted to test how the distance between the (Insta360 One X) camera and the Mavic Pro affects the amount of drone that remains in the image. I used a DJi Mavic 2 Pro here but it’ll be the same with the zoom or Mavic Pro or Platinum.

To mount the Insta360 One X to the Mavic I used 5 different lengths :

Insta360XDroneSizeAtMultipleLengths

It’s safe to say that anything over 40cm/16 inches isn’t worth it as the drone doesn’t shrink a lot more after that. Here’s what the Insta360 One X footage looks like :

To connect the Insta360 One X to the Mavic 2 I used our Mavic 2 bottom mount but it’ll work the same way if you use our Mavic 1 bottom mount. This was connected to our Insta360 One X Selfiemount and extended with our GoPro Extenders. If you move the camera further than a 10cm below the Mavic you’ll notice serious vibration so I used our double hinged mount to overcome that.

  1. Hi, thanks for testing and sharing! A question before buying this setup:

*I’m thinking of buying just the Mavic air Mount, the Insta360 One X Selfiemount and no extra extender, which will be 20cm bellow the mavic air instead of 40cm.

Will I get vibrations or do is it a MUST to get the double hinged mount as well to get rid of all vibrations?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Raul,

Thanks for the interest in my mounts.

I’ll play with it again tomorrow & film the result.

      1. Thanks I appreciate it!

I would be ordering asap as I need for some work stuff in two weeks.

      2. Hello Jean-Marie, were you able to test with the setup mentioned above for vibrations etc? I’d love to see your results.

        Thank you in advance!

    2. Hello.
I have a MP2 and tried another system to put an insta360 max2 40cm bellow the drone but got the pendulum of death.
If I use your system to get the drone the smallest possible will I also get the pendulum ?
      Thanks a lot

  2. Looking to do something similar on a Mavic 2 Pro (or Inspire 1, or both), ideally mount a single insta360 One X, but also am thinking about two (top/bottom) if stitching the footage together works as will be filming in non sky environments (so difficult to hide drone) – what setup wound you recommend Jean-Marie?

    Thanks,
    Shariff@Aerialview

    1. Hi Shariff,

It all depends on the scene of course.

If you have nothing but sky above it’s easy to remove a single cam below but if there are trees above or you’re working indoor a double camera is better. You can check my YouTube channel for a couple of video’s using both techniques :

      I’m working on a retractable Inspire (1 & 2) landing gear as well :

  3. Thanks Jean-Marie, yes saw the inspire mount the other day – looks like that could be a great option. Will check out the other video re removing using a double set up. Keep up the great work!

    1. Hi Jean-Marie, were you able to do the tests?I was wondering if the best results will be with the Mavic air Mount and the GoPro Stabilizer With Integrated Springs ? This is for Mavic Air with insta360 One X. Or can I go without the GoPro Stabilizer With Integrated Springs? I want no vibration at all for professional video work.

      Thank you!

    1. Hi Raul,

The Mavic Air really is to light for the extenders and will get into a ‘pendulum of death’.

You have to keep the Insta360 as close as possible to the body (top or bottom) of the drone.

      Regards,
      Jean-Marie Cannie

      1. Oh I see, even on the light insta 360 one x. Can you show me examples of it with extender and one
Without an extender on the bottom of the drone ?

If I use no extender, will it be really hard to later mask out the drone above ?

        Thanks.

  5. Hi Raul,

The closer to the drone the harder it is of course.

You could try 2 camera’s. I’ll try how far I can stretch the Air later this week.

    Regards,
    Jean-Marie Cannie

    1. Unfortunately I only have one camera.

Thank you for doing those tests later this week. As soon as you give me your best results I’ll order as I need the mounts to be in Colorado by March 1st for a job.

Thank you, I really appreciate your work.

    2. Hello Jean-Marie, I never heard back from you. Could you please let me know the best mount for no vibration for the Mavic Air with an insta360 one X on the bottom of it?

      Thank you

    1. Raul,

Didn’t bring out the Air yet. I spent most of my time on the Inspire stuff.

The weather wasn’t very cooperative either.

      Regards,
      Jean-Marie

      1. Ok Jean – Marie, any luck with the Mavic Air? I’m confused as what is the best setup to buy to have as little vibration as possible.

        Regards,

      2. Hi Raul,

Sorry to keep you waiting but this is just a hobby and the combination of the weather we got here & supporting half a dozen drones isn’t ideal …

        Regards,
        Jean-Marie

  8. I’m really confused as to what it is I need to purchase. I have the Mavic 2 Pro and an Insta360 One X and I’d like the setup that is seen in the image labeled “Sweet Spot”. When I look at each part individually, I can’t tell what is needed and what is not. For example, in the picture the camera is mounted to what looks like a GoPro type mount, but none of the parts for sale below the picture show that. Also, there are two different mounts that mount to the Mavic… which one do I need?

    1. Hi,

Sorry for the confusion but you’ll need the 4 items listed in the article :

The GoPro mount was replace with a custom Insta360 case.

  9. Hi, I want to hang my insta360 one camera from my phantom 4 pro. I have been see your videos for different distances for mavic, have you some distance recommendation for the phantom? and of course.. have you it for sell me? Thanks!!

      1. Ok! I’ll wait until you have a version with less vibration. Anyway, Mavic has less vibration than Phantom? I’m thinking on buy one. Thanks again!

    1. Hi,

I have a Phantom mount that’ll fit all Phantoms but I’m still looking for a better way to avoid the vibrations it causes.

Please check the Phantom link page again next week as I have a couple of vibration dampers coming in.

      Regards,
      Jean-Marie Cannie

  10. 4 mounts for one solution? Ah, come on… Why don’t you create just one solution to rule them all? (I guess, will still need 2 parts – a drone mount and 40cm insta 360 one x mount. Clean and simple. Can?

    1. The reason is that not everyone wants to use the same system/camera or drone.

You can put the camera straight to the drone and have a camera on top for the top of the image :

Others want it further away which can still depend on the amount of wind.

  11. Hi there,

In regards to the vibration you mention in the description of this post. Is my understanding correct that you would expect to get the vibrations if you used the Mavic 2 bottom mount and insta one x selfiemount (like in the second trial) without also using the double hinged clip? i.e. using the double hinge clip with the bottom mount and selfiemount removes the vibration?

    Thanks

  12. I tried mounting my Insta360 One X on top of my Mavic 2 Zoom and the drone wouldn’t take off due to a conflict with the WiFi from the camera. Any recommendations on how to overcome this? Do I switch the drone to a different mode that doesn’t use WiFi, do I somehow switch the WiFi off on the Insta360 One X, or is there another solution? Thanks all!

    1. Hi Scott,

There’s indeed an issue with the Insta360 One & One X eating the GPS signal of the Mavic 2 (since they moved the GPS to the head of the drone while the Mavic 1 had it in the back). There’s no direct solution for this.

I have asked Insta360 a couple of times if they couldn’t do a firmware update to turn off the WIFI (as this would save battery live as well) but didn’t get a reply yet.

      Regards,
      Jean-Marie Cannie

      1. Hi Jean, any news on this? I was about to pull the trigger and purchase the setup for my Insta360 One X and Mavic 2 Zoom but saw this post and glad I didn’t yet. Has this been resolved yet?

      2. Hi,

Nothing changed here. Putting an(y) Insta360 camera on top will almost always eat most of your GPS signal and put it in ATTI mode.
